Phnom Penh, January 27, 2018 – DKSH Cambodia, supported by Abbott Nutrition International, hosted the 6th Pediatric Congress 2018 at Garden City Hotel in Phnom Penh, At the event, the companies introduced an updated formula of PediaSure – the first pediatric nutritional supplement scientifically designed to address the specific nutritional needs of the growing child.
Professor Kim Ang, Professor of Pediatrics at National Pediatric Hospital and University of Healthy Science (UHS), spoke about the topic of “Growth Monitoring and Clinical Approach to the Short Child.” In his speech, he mentioned that “Child’s height become a critical measurement criterion to identify and evaluate the nutritional status. Furthermore, he added that children’s growth problems originated in chronic malnutrition. Parents should closely monitor their child’s height and discuss with their pediatricians for appropriate intervention, if their child showed signs of abnormal growth.
Renowned local healthcare professionals delivered their respective research work to an audience of over 200 healthcare professionals. Ms. Phuah Kar Yin, Principal Dietician, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics from KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, talked about “Nutritional intervention for catch-up growth.” She mentioned that during the critical period of growth, children required very specified nutrition. While their immune system was developing, they were more likely to develop infections. Moreover, nutritional intervention was crucial in the case of sickness or in a recovery period. The right nutritional intervention was highly important to support children’s catching up on growth, according to the dietician.
Dr. Loke Kah Yin, Head and Senior Consultant, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Department of Pediatric from Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, presented on “When should growth hormone therapy be considered in the short child?” She mentioned that when a child becomes short due to an illness, medical intervention became more important besides nutrition alone. To get the right intervention to support a catch-up in growth of those children, hormone therapy played an important role, even if it shouldn’t always come first. She was assisted in her presentation by Dr. Kong Polrith, Pediatrician, National Pediatric Hospital and Royal Phnom Penh Hotel.
